ORIENTEERING GRAND PRIX 2010:IN MONOPOLI RACE STUDENTS AND CHAMPIONS

After the success on Gargano and Castellaneta, the Mediterranean Open Championship of Orienteering conquest also the city centre of Monopoli with the second stage of the Grand Prix. At the final appointment of the Sixth Edition, inaugurated in Peschici on 26 February, the main orienteering international event in the Mediterranean Area has involved a third province, consecrating Apulia as excellent gym for the strong Scandinavian athletes. The victory was still a prerogative of the representative of Switzerland, on the basis of the world domination of the recent seasons. The race of Monopoli, raced in the historical centre with the Sprint formula, has registered the domain of the world champions Simona Niggli Luder and Daniel Hubmann, absolute winners of the Grand Prix and already in evidence in the first phase of the Mediterranean Open Championship. The historical centre of Monopoli is a very technical challenge: thanks to the maze of streets and roads close to the sea: the many foreign participants have highly appreciated the path, designed for the occasion by Finnish Markku Joensuu. Also the Bari district then, as happened in Vico del Gargano, greeted the twinning agonists of excellence and students, organised by the municipality of Regional Monopoli, School Office, CONI and Park Word Tour Italy.
Young students, thanks to the organisation Park World Tour and the electronic timing system, competed with the champions of orienteering in the Bari provincial final of Student Sports Games, confirming the effectiveness of binomial Sport-school.
A sunny day and the songs of Nicola Manfredi, composer of the international anthem of orienteering, have crowned a beautiful day of high-level sports.
The event ended with the solemn awarding ceremony with the Mayor Emilio Romans, together with the regional coordinator of the Office of physical education, Marino Pellico, the representative of Coni Bari, Calò, and to the President of the Park World Tour Italy, Gabriele Viale. And tomorrow, on the basis of another positive experience.
