MOC Mediterranean Open Championship Orienteering 2017
4/11/2016 - Interview with the NZ top orienteering star Tim Robertson

The Junior World Champion sprint (2014 and 2015) will take part in both MOC training camp & championship 2017!! 1) You've been Sprint Junior World Champion twice in a row (2014 and 2015). Now you're training in Europe. Could you introduce yourself and tell us which are your future goals? T.R.: It was always tough preparing in New Zealand for competition in Europe. However after success from Angela Simpson in 2011 and Matt Ogden’s Gold medal in 2012 the New Zealand juniors realized that it was possible to prepare at home for the Junior World Championships and still reach their highest goals. In 2013 I had my first taste of JWOC success, coming 3rd in the Sprint in Czech Republic. This was a huge motivation for my training in 2014 where I became the Junior World Champion. In January 2015 I moved to Oslo, Norway with the goal of retaining my title and competing well in the forest. It was an amazing feeling to win the gold twice in a row. I now look toward the 2017 season with the WOC sprint as my main goal for the year alongside the World Cup events. 2) The season 2016 has been important for you, as the first year as an elite runner. What are you expecting from 2017? T.R.: 2016 has been a great year for me. I have competed now in 5 World Championships but 2016 was my first as an ‘official senior’ this brought some extra pressure and something new to deal with. In 2017 I hope to improve my running speed. I feel this is the next step in reaching my goal of becoming a top sprint orienteer. The main focus for next year is the World Championships in Estonia and I hope to improve on my 13th placing from this year. 3) MOC: it will be your first participation to MOC - Mediterranean Open Championship Orienteering, and we are proud to get you at the start as one of top star! For sure you will be one of the athletes to challenge among the UNESCO sites next year. Have you been in Italy before? What do you like the most of Italy in general? T.R.: I am very excited for this competition, it will be a perfect build up to my 2017 season. I have traveled to Italy twice. Both times in 2014, for the World Orienteering Champs and the World Mountain Running Champs. I really enjoy the Italian food and the terrain is very special. See you in Italy in March!
