MOC 2022 – World’s top orienteering fighting for the Championship. Fosser, Michiels, Hubmann, Hadorn, Glibov & Scalet among the men Elite Janosikova, Aebersold, Vinogradova, Benjaminsen & Kalinina among the Women

The countdown for the 2022 Mediterranean Open Championship of orienteering has begun, which will be held on the 19 th and 20 th of March in Alberobello and Monopoli, also valid as the 1 st and 2 nd Italian Cup. Twenty years after the first historic international competition in the capital of the Trulli, where the Ukrainian Yuri Omeltchenko and the Norwegian Hanne Staff triumphed, great orienteering is once again the protagonist in Puglia.

THE TOP RUNNERS AT THE STARTING BLOCKS
Among the main athletes competing, from Belgium Yannick Michiels, number one in the Sprint World Ranking, strong of the European vice-champion title and the victories in the World Cup, while from Norway Kasper Fosser, winner of General World Cup and Long Distance World Cup 2021.

Remarkable representation of Switzerland, which drops its trio of aces: Martin Hubmann, European Relay and World Sprint Relay champion, Joey Hadorn, European Knock-Out vice champion and European Sprint Relay champion, and Simona Aebersold, vice world champion and silver medal in the 2021 World Cup overall, as well as European Sprint Relay champion. The Czech Republic will also be no less with Tereza Janosikova, number 5 in the Sprint World Ranking and sixth place at the European Sprint Relay 2021.  Among the best who will aim for the MOC victory also the Norwegian Andreine Benjaminsenand the Ukrainian Ruslan Glibov.

In addition to the title of Mediterranean champions, athletes will be able to fight to win important points for the World Ranking in the Monopoli stage.

THE MOC CAMPS, AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED
A dense program of itinerant training, between Basilicata and Puglia, will precede the weekend races. From the 13 th to 18 th of March, unique opportunities to test yourself in some of the most fascinating villages in southern Italy, also in preparation for the WMOCs in July, coordinated by Tommaso Scalet, PWT Italy Technical Director and with courses by Emil Wingstedt, multiple world champion in orienteering.

The Italian Sprint Distance Team led by coach Stefano Raus and the Italian number 1 Riccardo Scalet will be present at the camp. You just have to take advantage of the advantageous costs for air flights and car rentals in March to become the protagonist of what will be an exciting week for the international community of orienteers, between sport and tourism.

From Norway to Gargano, the Bernt Bjørnsgaard return The orienteering champ Bernt Bjørnsgaard is officially the WMOC 2022 International Ambassador. Bernt is one of the stronger orienteers in Norway around years 2000: World Champion in relay 1999, silver medal in relay in Tampere 2001, 4 times winner of Jukola and 4 times of Tiomila. At the top of the PWT World Series ranking, it’s also thanks to Bernt if orienteers with be able to run and enjoy Foresta Umbra. In the early 2000 Bernt with Gabriele Viale and Jorgen Martensson found a real paradise for orienteering and decided to make an international orienteering map.

3 things you need to know about Monte Sant’Angelo It was here that one of the first sprint maps for orienteering was perfected and already in 2004 it hosted an international event with Scandinavian and Swiss athletes. Monte Sant’Angelo will return on 9 July, together with Vico del Gargano, to welcome one of the Official WMOC trainings during the WMOC 2022
