The countdown has begun for the itinerant orienteering competition <em data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"603\">Five + Five Sardinia<\/em>, which will conclude the larger <strong><em data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"675\">Orienteering 4 Research Sardinia 2025<\/em> <\/strong>project, the result of collaboration between <strong><em data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"740\">Sardegna Ricerche<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"761\">SSD PWT Italia<\/em><\/strong>, with the support of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the Regional Natural Park of Gutturu Mannu, the Regional Natural Park of Porto Conte, Porto Conte Ricerche, FISO Sardinia, the City of Alghero, and the municipalities of Pula and Santadi.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1296\">An intense series of challenges will lead athletes to \u201cnavigate\u201d through unspoiled areas of great natural and technical value, further enhanced by newly developed maps, relying solely on a compass to find the fastest route to reach the correct sequence of checkpoints, called controls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1335\">The competitions will be hosted at:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1778\">\n<li data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1411\">\n<p data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1411\"><strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1379\">Su Guventeddu Beach \u2013 Batteria Boggio<\/strong> (Sunset Sprint, September 29)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1475\">\n<p data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1475\"><strong data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1430\">Piscinamanna<\/strong> (Sprint, September 30 \u2013 Middle, October 1)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1511\">\n<p data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1511\"><strong data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1489\">Santadi<\/strong> (Middle, October 2)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1512\" data-end=\"1563\">\n<p data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1563\"><strong data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1541\">Historic center of Pula<\/strong> (Sprint, October 3)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1619\">\n<p data-start=\"1566\" data-end=\"1619\"><strong data-start=\"1566\" data-end=\"1590\">Porto Conte Ricerche<\/strong> (Sunset Sprint, October 6)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1659\">\n<p data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1659\"><strong data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1637\">Lake Baratz<\/strong> (Middle, October 7)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1703\">\n<p data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1703\"><strong data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1683\">Porto Ferro Beach<\/strong> (Long, October 8)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1740\">\n<p data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1740\"><strong data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1718\">Fertilia<\/strong> (Sprint, October 9)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1741\" data-end=\"1778\">\n<p data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1778\"><strong data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1754\">Alghero<\/strong> (Sprint, October 10).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1783\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1821\">IN MEMORY OF MATTIA DEBERTOLIS<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"2159\">At the request of the family, PWT Italia, and the Italian Orienteering Federation\u2014represented in the Catalan city by President Alfio Giomi\u2014the final stage will host the <strong data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"2021\">Mattia Debertolis Memorial<\/strong>, in memory of the young Trentino champion who passed away prematurely in August following a sudden illness at the World Games in China.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2460\">At the end of the race\u2014recognized by the International Orienteering Federation as a <strong data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2268\">World Ranking Event<\/strong> awarding points for the elite world ranking\u2014a special prize named after Debertolis will be presented to the most promising young orienteer, in recognition of technical skills and fair play.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2462\" data-end=\"3202\">\u201cMattia, the jewel and captain of PWT Italia, was actively collaborating in the organization of the event: the Alghero map, near Maria Pia Beach, is the last mapping project signed by him before heading to the World Games,\u201d says General Manager Gabriele Viale. \u201cAs with the women\u2019s relay title won earlier this month, we are trying to transform the emotions tied to this tragedy into energy, holding on to his memory even more strongly. PWT Italia therefore returns to Sardinia with a beautiful mix of forest and urban stages, through historic centers and breathtaking landscapes. For the first 5 days we\u2019ll be in the south, based in the Sardinia Technology Park in Pula, then move to the north, based in Porto Conte Ricerche in Alghero.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3204\" data-end=\"3207\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3262\">SPORT AT THE SERVICE OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3263\" data-end=\"3791\">\u201cWith <em data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3303\">Orienteering 4 Research Sardinia<\/em> we have demonstrated that sport can become a powerful engine for research and innovation: competition in the field and moments of in-depth study integrate to produce evidence\u2014with rigorous data and protocols\u2014on how physical activity improves health, well-being, and cognitive functions, and supports active aging. It is a model that combines scientific excellence, enhancement of the territory, and sustainable development,\u201d says Carmen Atzori, General Director of <em data-start=\"3769\" data-end=\"3788\">Sardegna Ricerche<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"4173\">\u201cThrough <em data-start=\"3802\" data-end=\"3824\">Five + Five Sardinia<\/em>, our most evocative landscapes, home also to two locations of the Regional Technology Park, become an open-air laboratory where science and sport engage in fruitful dialogue. It is the culmination of a broader project involving schools, universities, and research centers to make Sardinia a benchmark in innovation applied to sport and wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4175\" data-end=\"4703\"><em data-start=\"4175\" data-end=\"4209\">Orienteering 4 Research Sardinia<\/em>, part of the <em data-start=\"4223\" data-end=\"4254\">Sport and Wellness 4 Research<\/em> project, was created from <em data-start=\"4281\" data-end=\"4302\">Sardegna Ricerche\u2019s<\/em> intention to analyze, through orienteering, the interaction between physical exercise and performance enhancement, between environment and psycho-physical well-being, in collaboration with PWT Italia. A key element was the creation of a network of partnerships with academia and the sports world to develop initiatives that translate scientific discoveries into effective and sustainable practices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4705\" data-end=\"4802\">In this context, with the support of <em data-start=\"4742\" data-end=\"4758\">Sport e Salute<\/em>, two scientific conferences will be held:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4803\" data-end=\"4976\">\n<li data-start=\"4803\" data-end=\"4898\">\n<p data-start=\"4805\" data-end=\"4898\"><strong data-start=\"4805\" data-end=\"4831\">Saturday, September 29<\/strong> (Sardinia Technology Park, Building 2 \u2013 Loc. Piscinamanna, Pula)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4899\" data-end=\"4976\">\n<p data-start=\"4901\" data-end=\"4976\"><strong data-start=\"4901\" data-end=\"4922\">Monday, October 6<\/strong> (Porto Conte Ricerche, Provincial Road 55, Alghero)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4978\" data-end=\"5173\">titled <em data-start=\"4985\" data-end=\"5041\">\u201cOrienteering 4 Research Sardinia: Research in Motion\u201d<\/em>, where the results of ongoing studies on the role of the sport in counteracting physical and cognitive decline will be presented.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5175\" data-end=\"6221\">\n<li data-start=\"5175\" data-end=\"5469\">\n<p data-start=\"5177\" data-end=\"5469\">Prof. <strong data-start=\"5183\" data-end=\"5199\">Lucia Cugusi<\/strong> and Prof. <strong data-start=\"5210\" data-end=\"5226\">Andrea Manca<\/strong>, from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sassari, will present <em data-start=\"5314\" data-end=\"5466\">\u201cEffects and applicability of a 3-month orienteering program in healthy elderly and in subjects with mild cognitive impairment: the ORIENTAge project\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5470\" data-end=\"5716\">\n<p data-start=\"5472\" data-end=\"5716\">Prof. <strong data-start=\"5478\" data-end=\"5495\">Filippo Tocco<\/strong>, Scientific Director of the SLAM Laboratory of <em data-start=\"5543\" data-end=\"5562\">Sardegna Ricerche<\/em> at the University of Cagliari, will present on <em data-start=\"5610\" data-end=\"5713\">\u201cCardiocirculatory, respiratory, and metabolic adjustments during physical exercise and mental tasks\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5717\" data-end=\"5989\">\n<p data-start=\"5719\" data-end=\"5989\">Prof. <strong data-start=\"5725\" data-end=\"5744\">Federico Schena<\/strong> and Prof. <strong data-start=\"5755\" data-end=\"5773\">Cantor Tarperi<\/strong>, from the Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement at the University of Verona, will present evidence from the <em data-start=\"5898\" data-end=\"5986\">\u201cStudy on the effects of orienteering on age-related physical and cognitive functions\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5990\" data-end=\"6221\">\n<p data-start=\"5992\" data-end=\"6221\">Finally, Canadian researcher <strong data-start=\"6021\" data-end=\"6044\">PhD Emma Waddington<\/strong>, MSc. Advancement Coordinator at McMaster University Advancement in Hamilton, Ontario, will present her research <em data-start=\"6158\" data-end=\"6218\">\u201cNavigating towards better brain health with orienteering\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6223\" data-end=\"6754\"><em data-start=\"6223\" data-end=\"6237\">5+5 Sardinia<\/em> is only the final act of a long journey that began in March with the involvement of schools, starting from the organization of the provincial phases of the Student Championships in orienteering, leading up to the Regional Finals to crown the island\u2019s young champions.
