Recommended beaches nearby Pula

Spiaggia di Tuerredda (Teulada)

The most famous of the three, often listed among the most beautiful beaches in Italy: fine sand, turquoise water, and a small islet you can reach by swimming about 100 meters from the shore. It’s located south of Chia, in the Teulada area.

  • How to get there: the SP71 scenic road (Costa del Sud), stunning but best driven at a relaxed pace.
  • Good for: families, since it’s sheltered from the mistral wind, the sea is almost always calm, and it’s great for swimming with kids or snorkeling.
  • ⚠️ Important note: access is limited and paid, with a maximum capacity of 1,100 people (371 in the beach clubs, 729 on the free beach); you can no longer just show up — you must book online in advance, especially in high season (July–August).   • Facilities: beach clubs, bars, restaurants, canoe and pedal boat rental, large paid parking (camper-friendly too).

Baia di Chia (Domus de Maria)

Not a single beach but a bay with several stretches of sand, each with its own character — worth knowing, since “Chia” on its own actually refers to about 7 km of coastline:

  • Su Giudeu: the most famous, with fine white sand, crystal-clear water and impressive dunes, ideal for families thanks to the shallow seabed.
  • Monte Cogoni: dunes topped by a 17th-century Spanish tower, shallow water near shore and deeper further out for snorkeling fans; quite windy, so popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
  • Cala Cipolla: a small, more sheltered and intimate cove.
  • Behind the beach there’s a lagoon with pink flamingos and other bird species — great for birdwatching.
  • Facilities: large paid parking lots and several kiosks, bars and restaurants near the main beaches.
  • No mandatory booking system like at Tuerredda (for now).

“Abamar Beach” (Santa Margherita di Pula)

Not an official Sardinian beach name, but it refers to the stretch of beach in front of/near the Abamar Hotel — essentially the Santa Margherita di Pula coastline — the “local” beach for anyone staying in Pula:

  • Features: almost ten kilometers of soft, golden sand meeting shallow, warm, greenish water, with a seabed so clear you can see it well even without diving in.
  • Layout: a series of connected bays and small coves, with different names such as Cala Marina and Cala Bernardini, lined with numerous luxury resorts.
  • Access: reached via small roads that run alongside the hotels or cut through the pine forests behind them — very convenient, perfect for families and anyone who wants amenities close by.
  • It’s the most “developed” and well-equipped of the three, a great base if you’re staying in the Pula area and want easy access to Nora (archaeological site) and Cagliari too.

There are three Code Hunter courses in the Pula area, similar to the Stolpejakten in Norway. The checkpoints are identified using the dedicated app.

*Notes on Terre Brune

Terre Brune is a flagship red wine from Cantina Santadi (southwestern Sardinia), a Carignano del Sulcis Superiore DOC made from the native Carignano grape. It is a powerful, elegant wine, valued for its complexity, structure and strong ageing potential.

It has received numerous important accolades, including the “Tre Bicchieri” award from Gambero Rosso for several vintages (2015, 2016, 2017, 2020), the “Quattro Viti” award from AIS (the Italian Sommelier Association), and several “Corona” awards from Vinibuoni d’Italia. On the nose, it shows intense aromas of ripe red and black fruit, spices, tobacco and Mediterranean herbs; on the palate it is full-bodied and well balanced, with elegant tannins and a long, persistent finish. What makes it special is its ability to express the identity of Sardinia and the Sulcis region, combining an indigenous grape variety with a unique Mediterranean terroir. It pairs well with red meat, game, grilled dishes and aged cheeses.
